Welcome to northern lights elementary

Dear Northern Lights’ Families:

Welcome 2018!  I hope the holidays were spent with loved ones and filled with joy and maybe a little rest after all the excitement.

The Sing-along was a great celebration of musical learning and the holiday season. Special thanks to music teacher Darin Bergsven and staff for support in putting together this event. I would also like to thank the Northern Lights PTA for sponsoring the PTA Café and Bake Sale.  It is an important fundraiser for Northern Lights and a great way for us to support PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies).  With your help, they raised over $940.00 which will directly support NL.

Over the next several weeks, all Northern Lights students will be taking reading and math assessments. These tests help us measure growth from fall to winter and assist teachers in making instructional decisions for your child’s learning.  Please feel free to ask your child’s teacher about the results of these assessments and what instructional adjustments may need to be made for your child if appropriate growth is not evident or if enrichment is needed.

Reminder: There is NO supervision for students before 8:30 a.m. or after 3:15 p.m.

Students are not allowed on the playground prior to school starting or after school ends at 3:15. These times of day are when we see incidences of injury from rough play and bullying.  Students may enter the school at 8:10 only if they are eating breakfast. They should remain in the cafeteria until 8:30 when assistants begin supervision at the doors. Please help us keep students safe at school.

Remind your children that they must have a winter coat, boots, hat, mittens and snow pants on to play freely at recess. If they are not appropriately dressed, they will need to stay on the sidewalk during recess. Children need to run and play during lunch and recess in order to focus on learning during the afternoon! If your family needs help providing warm clothing, please call me. I am happy to help.

The Northern Lights Diversity Team meets Monday, February 5 from 4:00-5:00p in D130 at Northern Lights. Enter through the main office door. All parents and community members are welcome. Childcare is provided if I’m notified it is needed. We are planning our Fourth Annual Celebrate Diversity through Song and Dance which will be held on Thursday, April 19 from 5:30-7:30p at Northern Lights Elementary School. Mark your calendars!

The PTA is sponsoring a Valentine's Dance on Friday, February 9 from 6-8 pm. It will be held in our gym and open to all NLE students and families. We hope you can join us!

I hope 2018 is filled with learning, laughter, and love for your family.

Greetings from the Music Room!

DSSO Concert - A Note From Our Music Teacher

Dear Fourth Grade Families,

Fourth Grade students will get to see the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra in concert on Friday morning, February 2. We will see a special Young People’s Concert, which will help us learn and remember the Instruments of the Orchestra that we are currently studying in music class. We will also demonstrate concert etiquette, including paying attention during the performance, being still and quiet, and clapping politely only after the entire piece is finished. There is no cost for this wonderful experience.

Students will hear Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony Number 6, “Pastoral Symphony, or a Recollection of a Country Life”, where the composer depicts the sights and sounds of a walk through the country near Vienna. They will also hear Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide Overture” and Richard Strauss’ “Till Eulenspielgel’s Merry Pranks”.

If you have any questions please email me (darin.bergsven@superior.k12.wi.us). Please ask your students to share their musical experiences with you!

Musically Yours,

Mr. Bergsven
